(A letter on behalf of the entire Omeletic Kitchen)
"Mexico City, May 29, 2025.
Dear friend, reader, spectator, internet user,
Today, exactly today, we celebrate 25 years of Omelete. It was on this date, two and a half decades ago, that we uploaded the first news on the site Omelete.com.br. The idea in those days was not to be in another country, to have an international presence, with one of the biggest pop culture events in the world.
No, we just wanted to have fun, be informed and talk to other people who liked the same things as us. As we had been consuming pop culture for some time - reading books and comics, watching films and series, going to concerts and playing games (video games and RPGs) - we saw a way of talking about a subject and also pointing out other things and, in this way, opening up horizons, showing what was being released that was cool.
Hence the name Omelette. We could mix up a bunch of ingredients we liked, stir everything together, put it on the fire and serve it.
The site came about shortly after the "internet bubble" burst and for a long time it was a hobby job, something we did in the evenings, late nights and weekends, after our "main job". And you could say that we were very lucky along the way. Lucky because we were in the right place at the right time doing (in the right way) what we liked and understood.
Let's remember that it was in the same year, 2000, that the first X-Men movie came out in theaters. One of the first notes that went up was about who could be Spider-Man in the first Neighborhood Friend movie (Heath Ledger, Wes Bentley, Chris Klein, Tobey Maguire, Ewan McGregor, Nicholas Brendon and Leonardo DiCaprio were among the rumors at the time, with filming scheduled to start in December of that year).
Yes, it was at that moment that Hollywood began to see comics as a tried and tested raw material, with hundreds of characters and thousands of stories. And we already knew those heroes and those stories and we wrote articles and followed everything that was coming out until the premieres and already had an eye on what was coming next.
And so the site grew, we met more people, we entered the market, we were called upon for events unimaginable for a website, such as, for example, interviewing the Hobbits and Peter Jackson at the world premiere of The Lord of the Rings - The Two Towersin Paris, watching the filming of Superman Returns in Australia. It's worth remembering that at the time, we were competing for this space with print media such as Folha de S. Paulo, Estadão, O Globo, Veja, SET, etc. and Omelete was one of the first sites to be there, side by side with them. We were also pioneers in seeking out video opportunities, doing interviews where before only Rede Globo, SBT, MTV...
Yes, we were lucky, but it was also a lot of work. And not just by one person, but by a group. A team that underwent countless changes over time, but that always had a lot of affection for what they were doing. Perhaps this is the "secret ingredient" in our Omelette recipe: we love what we do.
And we'll keep doing it!
Omelete hasn't been just a website for a long time. It's a huge community of people who live pop culture.
Another 25 years?
We can't tell, but thanks to you, our energy pot is quite full.
So thank you to those of you who have come here in some way, whether through the website, social networks, videos or events.
Long and prosperous life and may strength always be with you!
Hugs and kisses,
Marcelo Forlani (on behalf of the entire Omeletic Kitchen)"
